Read Books
Along with a passion for creating websites and something else interesting, I am also a voracious reader, I love read as much as design, and like a Chinese proverb says: "书中自有黄金屋,书中自有颜如玉" - "with the knowledge reading from books, we can obtain great future."
Photoshop Image Making - by Hwang Yong II
It is a Photoshop learning book for the beginners and the advanced users, written by "Hwang Yong II":http://thehysteric.com/, who is a korean-based designer. I think I bought this book in 2007, at that time I was looking for a book that could give me the idea about creating beautiful and meaningful web ad banner & Header image.
OK, I think this book is really good for:
- Web Design - you can learn how to create a beautiful and nice Header Image, web ad banner, background graphic, and something else about web design.
- Graphic Design - Don't have a idea about making the Album Cover, Artwork, letter background graphic, and even the Gallery yet?, read it and you would get something you need.
- Choosing the right picture material for your design - Yeah, you have thousands of picture materials, but you are missing the way to choose one of them for your design, you are confused, I understand. This book would give you some suggestion to pick the right one for your design
With this book, you can find out the way to make a nice graphic(image), and step further, you can even make the nice image with the pictures those were taken by yourself as the material.
And this book has another nice stuff that comes with also - a CD that includes the images for the chapters of this book and the original PSD file, and even especially the other 417 pictures including!
Graphic Design School - written by David Dabner
I really liked it when I read it for the first time. It's really a good book for the people who is just getting started to study the principles about the Graphic Design or something like that. I think it is a book that includes the basic principles and deeper techniques of design thing. As a graphic design textbook(for me, at least), it explains what the graphic design is and how it works for people, with so many actual examples inside the books those ranges from Book design to Website design, it's not a boring "textbook" if it was a textbook, I think. I bought the Chinese version of it, prefect translation and print quality, it should be better of the english version, I guess. You wouldn't use it just one time then leave it to dust, it's that book you can have it handed in anytime when you need to get idea reference or things like that.
One thing I learned from this book is "For the future graphic designer, the significance of exploring the sketch is to expand the design concept." So, don't leave your pencil alone, just pick it up, that would be greatly helpful :)
Homepage Usability
I think a homepage is the most important part of a website, it's the "face" or "window" of your/ your company / organization to the world. We get a homepage to show the people who's visiting your site that what your company is or who you are.
So who's Jakob? He's an expert in the field of Uer Exprience & Site Usability. So how this book works for you? This book includes this:
Homepage Usability examines the effectiveness of 50 homepages, chosen because of the popularity or prominence of the company, government agency, or non-profit institution they represent.
This book has helped me with these aspects of what the abilities I was looking for before:
- Content writing - Effective content writing is one of the most critical aspects of all web design
- Archive - I think a homepage is to put the archive of your whole site well and logically, also
- Search - don't forget to put a search bar on your homepage, anyway!
About Face 3 - The Essentials of Interaction Design
Written by Alan Cooper, Robert Reimann, and David Cornin. As the cover page of this book said:"An international bestseller, now completely revised and updated". It's a book that's kind of like the "bible" of Interaction Design, I knew that from a design-related site and it said that's a great book just meets all your design needs, such as website design, software interface and things like that. Well, when I was looking for the book(about face 2) around China, the latest version is coming out right around the world - except in China, I can't buy this book anywhere in China, it's terrible seriously. You know, I am a web designer, and really need this book to widen my vision on the design fields, especially the interaction design, that's all the people need to do when ones meet a design process. And it even lets you know something about mobile devices design, that's the thing about the future of design, I think. I really like this book though it's a little thicker than the other design-related books, but it's worth that you read it and come after it.
